There will be General Sessions and three types of courses offered:

Clubs and Tournaments

1) Keys to Club Building and Growth: Shirin Schneider and Patricia Shaw
How do I start a club? What exactly do I DO at a club meeting? How do I teach both beginning students and advanced students? How do I keep my advanced students coming back for more? How can I get other parents involved? Are there any resources to make this job easier? If you have ever wondered these questions, or if you have answers to these questions, THIS is the session for you! Come visit with Patricia Shaw about how to build and grow a club.

2) Becoming a Better Judge: Angela Childress and Katie Herche
Learn to better understand ballots so that you can guide and encourage students with constructive feedback.

3) Running Tournaments Part 1 - Tournament in a Box: Angela Childress and Alicia Stunkel
You’re hosting your first tournament. Where do you start? Get loads of resources and a demo of Stoa’s new online tool Tournament in Box, free to all Stoa members!

4) Community Judge Outreach: Colleen Enos
Community Judges are a crucial and integral part of our tournaments. They bring unique perspective while sharing valuable information with you! This is an important connection that builds relationships beyond the competition, blessing everyone involved.
This session is designed to show you how to recruit Community Judges and their value to our students.

5) Running a Tournament Part 2 - StoaTrax - A Demonstration: Barb Lindsay
Learn how this software can help your tournament and your judges. Bring your laptop/iPad/tablet - NO software download necessary!

6) Running a Tournament Part 3 - Flowpad: Keli Sparks & Sharon Nagatani
Learn about Flowpad, the online tournament registration, used for managing your tournament. Bring your laptop/iPad/tablet to practice creating a tournament.

7) Running Tournaments Part 4 - Pre-Tournament Prep: Shelley DeJager, Sue Danielson, Matthew Shipley, and Mary Winther
Mars Hill & Apologetics Topics Prep, E-Submission, Extemp Prep, Parli Prep

8) Beyond the Tournament - The Other 80%: Maggie Carabelos
Only 20% of students will walk across the stage, what do you do with the other 80%? This session is designed to teach you how to inspire students to the true meaning of competition.


Speech

1) Finding Speech Material - Platforms & Interps: Shelley DeJager and Leslie Martin
“How do I find the perfect interp piece and compelling platform topics?” It’s a common question. Get great ideas on how to direct competitors to creative and smart choices.

2) Keys to Coaching Apologetics: Wayne Johnson
Keys to motivating competitors to study, articulate, and defend the core issues of their faith in a knowledgeable, sincere, gentle, and respectful manner.

3) Keys to Coaching Powerful Platforms: Shelley DeJager
Learn the building blocks of powerful platforms that all competitors from novice to advanced need to know. This is a must see for all speech coaches and parents. Every student can and should write a powerful platform!

4) Keys to Coaching Innovative Interps: Sue Danielson and Leslie Martin
In this practical workshop, learn the principles for creating a story with a message. Then, see how that script translates to blocking and delivery. Coaches and parents will feel motivated to coach innovative interps!

5) Keys to Coaching Meaningful Mars Hill: Christopher Bateman
Effective evangelism skills are taught through this exciting event. Let us demonstrate how Mars Hill can be coached with a heart for Christ!

6) Keys to Coaching Extemp: Colleen Enos and Larry Sparks
Have a huge team that is hard to manage? How about a small team that is discouraged in Extemp? Get tips from the pros on tools and skill development to improve your Extemp game!

7) Keys to Coaching the new Wildcard Event: Matthew Shipley and Alicia Stunkel
Join us for an introduction to our exciting new wildcard! Preview the rules and ballot then hear tips for how to prepare a compelling speech.

8) Speech Education in Adjudication: Angela Childress, Sue Danielson, Matthew Shipley
Join our seasoned leaders and discuss how to approach adjudication in the most educational and productive way possible. We’ll cover adjudication philosophy, prevention, planning, and process.

9) Speech Round Table: Speech Committee
Join the Speech Committee to get the nitty gritty on this season's Stoa speech event changes. All speech questions and ideas are welcome!


Debate

1) Introduction to Debate: Lincoln Douglas, Team Policy, Parliamentary: Debate Committee

2) Stoa Parli Vision: Dorr Clark
A presentation on the (brief) history of how the introduction of Parli was critical for the formation and success of Stoa, why the Parli event is important to the development of our students, and some guidance regarding coaching/competition/event for those parents & coaches who are considering engaging Parli.

3) Keys to Coaching Parliamentary Debate: Colleen Enos
Are you wondering how to introduce Parli to your club? Who should do it? How to coach it? Then this class is for you. We will walk through tools, resources and techniques to coach Parli. You will get practical information that you can apply for the upcoming year. Q & A is included. Hear, hear!! (Knocks on table)

4) Overview of the Lincoln Douglas Debate Resolution: Larry Sparks
An overview and analysis of the new resolution, including case ideas and direction for research.

5) Overview of Team Policy Debate Resolution: Steven Vaughan & Mike Winther
An overview and analysis of the new resolution, including case ideas and direction for research.

6) Ethical Evidence: Steven Vaughan & Mary Winther
Evidence is the biggest source of contention in debate rounds and adjudications. It's also the primary (if not only way) students can be tempted to cheat. Learn about the standards for editing and using evidence ethically in debate rounds, and how you can help your students be above reproach.

7) Maximizing Cross-Ex: Katie Herche & Larry Sparks
Cross-examination is an important part of every TP and LD round. We’ll discuss strategies and tactics that debaters can use in every round to boost the effectiveness of their cross-ex time.

8) How to Write Parli Resolutions: Colleen Enos & Mary Winther
Part of fostering healthy parli competition is providing quality resolutions for practice rounds and tournaments. In this session you'll learn about the attributes of a good parli resolution, how to write them, and common pitfalls to avoid.

9) Stock Issues: Mike Winther
A defense of Stock issues. It is popular among debaters and some coaches to denigrate the century-old concept of stock issues. But in this session, Mike will explain the stock issues and why they are valuable tools for team policy debaters.

10) Value Clash & Argumentation: Larry Sparks
What every LDer needs to know! This session will cover the concept and formation of value clash, including understanding value premise, value objection, value-criterion structure and more. You’ll learn about the theory of arguing values, practical argumentation tips, and walk away with drills you can use with your LD students.

11) The Resolution’s Always in the Room (TP Theory for Advanced Debaters): Dorr Clark
How to make advanced ideas in team policy debate theory simple & accessible for novice judges.

12) Embracing the Subjectivity of Debate (Coaching Debaters to Success): Katie Herche
The vast majority of student (and parent) complaints come from the subjective nature of judges in debate rounds. Learn how to love the subjectivity of debate, how to talk to frustrated students and parents, and how to coach students to success with judges of all kinds.

13) Debate Adjudication & Conflict Resolution: Mike & Mary Winther
How do we balance justice and fairness with mercy? When do we confront an erring brother or sister and when should we turn the other cheek? This session will discuss how to handle rule violations at tournaments, and what coaches and parents can do to foster healthy resolutions to tricky situations.

14) It's All About the Flow: Chris Jeub
We're told to "take notes" on the flow, but the flowsheet should be the guiding tool to rendering the best decision for the students. Proper flowing techniques will be modeled on the whiteboard with the hopes coaches bring these helpful techniques back to their parents and community judges.
